Challah bread, especially braided loaves, are meant to symbolize the intricacies inherent in life. Different paths (those literal and figurative) bring bumps-some much bigger than others. Today, while glazing these, I made the decision not to hide behind a sea of seeds- today, because I feel even sadder than yesterday, I chose to make this particular bread (which is always the first bread I turn to, whether to help someone else or myself). And, by deliberately removing the mask that seeds provide, something that doesn’t just give an array of tastes and textures- but bakers also use them, strategically, to cover imperfections- today, I wanted to look life straight in the eye-bumps and all.
